family-owned heavenly handmade ice cream

Gelati Celesti began as a collaboration between father and son and remains a family run business focused on serving joy to local Virginia communities with small-batch, premium ice cream.

In 1984, Peter Edmonds and his father, John, opened the business with one location, on West Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia. They shared a vision and a single goal—to bring joy to others by making the very best ice cream possible, scooped up with the very best service.

Our unique recipe and philosophy remain unchanged. We are honored to continue the Gelati Celesti tradition of handmade, small-batch, premium ice cream to Virginia communities.

  • 1984: Our flagship West Broad location is founded by father and son Peter & John Edmonds.

  • 1990’s: at the request of local restaurateurs, we began selling ice cream to some of Richmond’s premier restaurants.

  • 2010: Steve and Kim Rosser, long-time family friends of the Edmonds purchase Gelati with a commitment to continuing the tradition of handmade, small-batch, premium ice cream.

  • 2011: Our first central kitchen is established setting the stage to bring more joy to RVA.

  • 2012: Our second location opens, scooping joy to our neighbors south of the river in Bon Air.

  • 2013: The Gelati Food Truck hits the road, delivering scoops and smiles to events throughout Richmond.

  • 2014: By popular demand our third location opens in Short Pump.

  • 2017: Our Scotts Addition location opens, bringing our premium small batch ice cream to four distinct areas in RVA.

  • 2018: Our Grove Avenue location opens. We also open a new, larger kitchen to support expansion, while continuing our commitment to handmade, small-batch, premium ice cream.

  • 2019: Suzy Rosser re-joined Gelati Celesti to open our first Virginia Beach location opens, serving freshly churned flavors over the Southside in Hilltop.

  • 2020: Our second Virginia Beach store opens, serving the Swift Creek community. Suzy Rosser joins the leadership team overseeing all retail locations

  • 2021: After much demand from the RVA community our Mechanicsville location opens as a pop-up.  (Note: it started with a pop-up in 2021 but became the real thing in 2022) We also opened our Town Center store in Fall of 2021

  • 2022: Our third Virginia Beach location opens in Chesapeake, bringing us to 10 joyful locations throughout RVA and VA Beach. Tom Rosser joins the leadership team overseeing business development

  • 2023: Owners Steve and Kim Rosser, pass the scoop to the next generation, naming Suzy and Tom as co-presidents, maintaining the same community to quality and community that began with the Edmonds in 1984.
