our story

Gelati Celesti Ice Cream Red Mill Shop.jpg

A LOCAL TRADITION SINCE 1984

Bring joy to others by making the best ice cream possible scooped up with the best service.

Gelati Celesti started in 1984 on West Broad Street in Richmond, VA as a small neighborhood ice cream shop owned by Peter Edmonds and his father, John. It was built on a simple idea: make great ice cream with care, serve people well, and bring a little joy to their day.

That idea still guides everything we do.

Over the years, Gelati Celesti has grown from one shop into eleven neighborhood locations across Richmond and Hampton Roads. Even as we’ve grown, we’ve stayed local, family-owned, and committed to making our ice cream right here in Virginia. Growth never meant changing who we are. It meant sharing what we love with more communities.

In 2010, longtime family friends Steve and Kim Rosser took over the business, continuing the handmade, small-batch tradition. In 2023, leadership transitioned to the next generation, with Suzy and Tom Rosser stepping into co-president roles. In 2026, Suzy shifted into a marketing and brand leadership role while Tom continues as president. Together, they remain focused on carrying forward the values that have always mattered here.

Today, we still make our ice cream in small batches using Italian equipment that minimizes air, which is why our ice cream is thick, creamy, and full of flavor. But what matters just as much as what's in the scoop is creating a place people want to come back to. We love being a part of birthdays, first dates, after-dinner stops, and ordinary Tuesdays across Virginia.

Thank you for making us part of your traditions. We're glad you're here.
